Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on August 9th, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. The mother of Whitney Houston and her daughter began singing professionally at New Hope Baptist Church of Newark in the year Whitney was just 15 years old. They performed the back vocals in Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly did a stint as a fashion model and appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also performed backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. The quality of her work as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material caught the eye of major record labels, including Arista and Arista, which she signed her contract in 1982, where she continued to work for the remainder of her career. In 1985, the debut of Whitney Houston turned out to be one of the most successful debut albums of all time. From the album, she had several smash singles, including Saving all My Love for You How Are You Going to Know If You're Good to Love And The More Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US Number Ones consecutively. She beat even the Beatles. The album itself sold 3 million copies in its first album's first year of release in the US and then went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning her the first of her six Grammys. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles What Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her debut album. However, it was it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her status as one the world's most loved artist. Even though the movie and actor's performance weren't highly praised, the soundtrack album featuring her rendition of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her top album and single for a number of months. It sold over 44 million copies worldwide. In the same year she had her daughter Bobbi she married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group.
